Pete Russell Returns to MK Lightning as Director of Hockey and Head Coach

Pete Russell, the highly respected Great Britain men’s national team head coach, has been appointed Director of Hockey and Head Coach for the Planet Ice NIHL National Division side, MK Lightning.

This move marks a significant homecoming for Russell, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in British ice hockey. He returns to Milton Keynes after several successful years coaching in European leagues and leading the Great Britain national team on the international stage.

Russell previously enjoyed a remarkable tenure with the Lightning between 2015 and 2018, guiding the club through one of its most successful periods. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing Milton Keynes as a formidable force in British ice hockey, securing cup and playoff victories in the 2016/17 season and overseeing their seamless transition into the Elite Ice Hockey League.

Following his initial spell in the UK, Russell further honed his coaching expertise in Germany, working with prominent clubs such as EHC Freiburg, Ravensburg Towerstars, and Augsburger Panther.

Beyond club responsibilities, Russell has steered Great Britain through an unprecedented era of success in the nation’s hockey history. Under his leadership, Great Britain achieved historic promotions at the IIHF World Championships, significantly re-establishing the country’s presence among the world's elite hockey nations.

Russell's Vision for MK Lightning

MK Lightning concluded the recent NIHL National Division season in sixth place, with playoffs commencing shortly. Russell will assume full-time head coaching duties ahead of the upcoming season and is already actively involved in constructing a roster specifically "designed to compete for silverware."
