Jalen Brunson Powers Knicks to Seventh Straight Win, Closing Gap on Celtics

The New York Knicks secured their seventh consecutive victory, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 121-116 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. This impressive win streak, now tying their second-longest of the season, was largely due to Jalen Brunson's phenomenal late-game heroics, a familiar scenario for Knicks fans.

Despite strong scoring efforts earlier in the game from teammates like OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns, Brunson took command when the game hung in the balance. He tallied 10 consecutive points for the Knicks and was personally responsible for 15 of their final 18 points in the fourth quarter. Including an assist on a Josh Hart layup, Brunson was instrumental in 17 of the team's last 18 points. He finished as the game's leading scorer with 32 points and added seven assists.

Reflecting on his performance, Brunson stated, "Just trying to be myself. Stick to my habits, focus on my work ethic, what’s gotten me here. And keep it that way." Teammate Josh Hart echoed this sentiment, emphasizing, "That’s the position that I know he likes to be in. We want him in that position... That’s when your players, your superstars, your main guys go out there and show why they’re at that level. That’s what he did."

Crucial to the Knicks' success were their efficient free-throw shooting, converting 11 of 12 attempts in the fourth quarter and 20 of 22 overall, alongside a significant 14-2 advantage in second-chance points.

This victory is particularly impactful for the Eastern Conference standings. Having started the night just half a game behind the Celtics for the No. 2 seed, the Knicks' win now creates a virtual tie. Should the Celtics falter against the Thunder on Wednesday, New York would move ahead.

Pelicans coach Mike Brown had highlighted his team's fast-paced style, which was evident in a high-scoring first half where the Knicks' defense initially struggled. However, New York managed to control the tempo more effectively in the second half. While Zion Williamson, who previously scored 32 points against the Knicks, contributed an efficient 22 points on 8-for-10 shooting, he was prevented from fully taking over the game. OG Anunoby, in particular, was key in defending Williamson, notably blocking and stripping him in the fourth quarter.

A balanced offensive attack saw seven Knicks players reach double-digit scoring. Anunoby and Towns each contributed 21 points, with Mikal Bridges adding 14, and Josh Hart, Mitchell Robinson, and Jordan Clarkson each scoring 10. Robinson also pulled down eight rebounds, including four offensive boards, making a significant impact off the bench. The Knicks ended the game with impressive shooting percentages: 51.8% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. Coach Brown acknowledged the high-scoring nature of the game, calling it "funky," with both teams excelling offensively.

The Pelicans, despite their lower standing, proved to be a formidable opponent, having won five of their last seven games. With Zion Williamson's talent and no incentive to tank, they presented a tougher challenge than some of the Knicks' recent opponents.

The game featured significant swings: after trailing early, the Knicks launched a 15-0 run to close the first quarter with a 14-point lead. The Pelicans responded with an 18-2 run to start the second, briefly taking the lead before the Knicks stabilized to lead by six at halftime. New Orleans outscored New York by five in the third, leaving the Knicks with a precarious one-point lead heading into the final quarter. As anticipated, when Jalen Brunson re-entered the game with 7:25 remaining, he once again took center stage to secure the victory.
