Friedkin Urged to Make Firm Roma Decision as Gasperini Continues on Mourinho's Path
Roma's owners are under pressure to make definitive choices as coach Gian Piero Gasperini and senior advisor Claudio Ranieri are scheduled to meet at the club's training ground. This meeting follows a public disagreement between the two figures.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gasperini and Ranieri will cross paths for the first time since their exchange of views on Friday. Gasperini has been vocal about the club's transfer activities this season and, reportedly, is also dissatisfied with the medical staff's handling of key player injuries, including those of Paulo Dybala and Wesley.
The relationship between Gasperini and sporting director Frederic Massara is known to be strained. Senior advisor Ranieri intervened on Friday, asserting that Gasperini had approved all signings this term and revealing that the Italian tactician was hired last summer after other candidates had declined the role.
As Gasperini and Ranieri prepare for their Monday meeting, Gazzetta suggests that owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin must make firm decisions regarding the club's direction beyond the summer. The newspaper observes that Ranieri, Massara, and Gasperini appear incompatible, necessitating a choice from the owners about who to entrust with the club's future for the 2026-27 season.
Gasperini, whose contract with Roma extends until 2028, is not the first coach in recent years to openly criticize the club. José Mourinho adopted a similar stance during his two-and-a-half-year tenure, which concluded with his dismissal in January 2024.
While Roma's management is reportedly displeased with Gasperini's attitude, the team remains in contention for a Champions League spot despite some disappointing recent results. The owners will have to decide whether to continue with Gasperini, which would likely involve granting him greater authority, particularly in the transfer market. Alternatively, retaining Massara and Ranieri would signify the initiation of a new sporting project, following the recent dismissals of Mourinho, Daniele De Rossi, and Ivan Juric.
