CTA Admits Refereeing Error in Madrid Derby: Atlético Star Should Have Been Red-Carded
Spain's Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has admitted a major officiating error from the weekend's Madrid Derby. It has been confirmed that Atlético's Lee Kang-in should have been sent off during the match.
Kang was involved in a contentious moment when he made a poorly timed, dangerous challenge on Federico Valverde. His studs were high on the Uruguayan's ankle. Despite the severity, the tackle did not result in a yellow card and was not reviewed by VAR.
The CTA has now stated that the correct decision would have been a direct free kick and a red card. They acknowledged a "clear and manifest error by the referee" and that "the VAR should have intervened."
