Real Madrid is actively seeking to recruit a new central defender this summer to fill the void left by David Alaba. Their efforts have encountered numerous setbacks, with several targets opting for other clubs. However, they may now be close to securing one of their initial preferred choices.
As early as last summer, Real Madrid expressed considerable interest in Ibrahima Konate. The Liverpool defender was identified as their primary target for the current transfer window, anticipating his potential availability as a free agent.
Historically, Real Madrid has excelled in utilizing the free agent market, having successfully acquired players such as Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Konate could be the next addition, as he has recently resurfaced on their radar after an initial deal was deemed unfeasible in November.
However, recent reports indicated that Konate was on the verge of signing an extension with Liverpool, which would have jeopardized Real Madrid’s plans to acquire him on a free transfer. Fortunately for the Spanish club, this situation appears to have changed. According to Ben Jacobs, there is a high probability that the 27-year-old will depart Anfield at the end of next month when his current contract expires.
New Manager Faces Decision on Konate Deal
Significant differences remain between Konate and Liverpool regarding contract terms. With only one month remaining on his current deal and his participation in the upcoming World Cup likely hindering further talks, it is anticipated that no agreement will be reached before the beginning of July.
This development could pave the way for Real Madrid to sign their desired player. Nevertheless, the ultimate decision would rest with their next head coach, which, if Florentino Perez is successful in the upcoming presidential elections, could be Jose Mourinho.
