Amidst a packed schedule of over 15 tournaments, with draws filling and titles being claimed, two significant announcements marked the quiet conclusion of two tennis careers.

Noteworthy Tennis Retirements in February 2026

1. Valeria Bhunu

Valeria Bhunu, 30, a former Top 500 player on the WTA Tour, has officially retired. Once Zimbabwe’s highest-ranked singles player, she reached a career-high of 497th in singles and held a ranking of 637th at the time of her retirement. Throughout her career, Bhunu secured three ITF titles, with her most recent victory occurring in Hillcrest, South Africa, last July.

Bhunu's career prize money totaled just under $50,000, a sum significantly reduced by legal expenses incurred while challenging a doping violation nearly five years prior. After an unsuccessful appeal, she faced a three-year ban for testing positive for Mesterolone. Cleared to return in 2025, her comeback was short-lived, lasting only 12 months before she formally filed for retirement with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in February 2026.

2. Fernanda Contreras

The WTA Tour also saw the retirement of Fernanda Contreras, 28, whose career was cut short by persistent injuries. A former top 200 player, Contreras had a breakout 2022 season, qualifying for three of the four Grand Slams and securing a main draw win at the French Open. However, ongoing health issues severely limited her play, allowing her to compete in only 13 matches over the subsequent two seasons.

Contreras played her final singles tournament at an ITF event in Zagreb last June, and her last WTA-level match was a doubles appearance at the Guadalajara Open in September. An academic achiever, she played college tennis at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating in 2019 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
