Lamine Yamal stated he has sufficient grounds to win the Ballon d'Or this season. The Barcelona winger made a strong case with a remarkable performance in Spain's 4-1 victory over Croatia on Tuesday. He contributed two goals and an assist in Spain's season opener, extending their unbeaten streak to 40 matches.
Yamal opened the scoring early in the match and added Spain's third goal after halftime. His first goal resulted from a play involving Alex Baena and Fermin Lopez, creating an opening for him in the penalty area. Yamal aimed for the near post, catching goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic off guard.
Following the game, Yamal explained that his familiarity with the Croatian goalkeeper informed his finishing decision. "I know him from training. I've thought about training, about what he does, and it worked," Yamal said.
When asked if his performance offered another argument for the Ballon d'Or, Yamal responded concisely, "Another one."
Although the vote for this year's award has concluded, Yamal emphasized that individual accolades do not solely drive his motivation. "Ultimately, I don't play just for this Ballon d'Or. I play for myself, for the fans, for next season, for my team, to keep winning," he stated.
"I don't know. I don't vote, nor do I know who won. I know nothing. Let's wait and keep playing," Yamal added. "We are very excited to bring the cup here, show it to the fans, and win it. We must always start with focus, following the coach's instructions and our team discussions. I'm very happy about the victory."
