Real Madrid President Florentino Perez could be facing an election for his position for the first time in over two decades, with businessman Enrique Riquelme appearing to be his rival. Riquelme had previously considered a run in 2020.
Perez himself mentioned Riquelme’s potential candidacy during a press conference called for elections. While the Real Madrid president has run unopposed for the past five elections, Riquelme may indeed present the challenge that Perez seemed to invite. Candidates have until Saturday, May 23rd, to officially declare their intentions.
Riquelme confirms he has bank guarantee
One of the significant hurdles for potential challengers are the strict eligibility requirements. Candidates must be Spanish nationals, have been a club member for at least 15 years, and be able to provide a bank guarantee equivalent to 15% of the club’s budget, which currently stands at approximately €187 million, along with their board members.
Enrique Riquelme is among the few individuals who meet these stringent criteria. The energy magnate informed Diario AS, “Of course, I have the guarantee; otherwise, I wouldn’t be discussing this. There will be news in two or three days.”
“It must be beneficial for Real Madrid. We won’t waste time. We will make a decision in the coming days. If we proceed, it will be for a sensible reason that will excite the members for the next 10, 15, or 20 years. The objective is to work, dedicate three more days to it, and if we are prepared, we will certainly run.”
Reports indicate Riquelme is set to run
Perez’s public mention of Riquelme was interpreted by many as a strategic move to potentially catch him off guard and discourage a challenge. However, reports from El Confidencial (via MD) were the first to suggest Riquelme had decided to run. This was later confirmed by Ramon Alvarez de Mon and subsequently by Cadena SER on Monday.
In the upcoming days, Riquelme will focus on assembling a sporting project to present his case. If he formally submits his candidacy, it will be ratified on May 23rd. The election process would commence on the 25th, with the vote scheduled to take place within the following 15 days, likely around June 7th.
