Preview Fife Flyers Retain Garet Hunt, Appoint Gritty Forward to Dual Role

The Fife Flyers have made their first offseason acquisition by re-signing Garet Hunt, a move that underscores the club’s core values. On Monday, April 13th, it was announced that the 38-year-old will return for his second season with the team, taking on expanded responsibilities as both a player and an assistant coach.

During the 2025-26 season, Hunt served as captain for the Flyers, contributing 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) and accumulating 174 penalty minutes across 55 games. While he faced disciplinary actions, including a nine-game suspension and multiple fines from the Elite League Department of Player Safety, his impact on the team extended beyond statistics.

Hunt has become a fan favorite in Fife, recognized for his instrumental role in maintaining team cohesion during a challenging period for the Flyers under new ownership. His aggressive and uncompromising style of play, characterized by tenacity and a willingness to play on the edge, resonates strongly with the supporters at the Fife Ice Arena. Despite his 5-foot-9 frame, Hunt plays with a larger presence and is considered a natural leader, a quality that will be vital in his new dual role.

Who is Fife Flyers Forward and Assistant Coach Garet Hunt?

Garet Hunt began his professional hockey career in 2008 with the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder. He spent seven seasons with Stockton, serving as captain for four of them. He concluded his 13-year ECHL career with stints at the Alaska Aces, Jacksonville IceMen, Wheeling Nailers, and South Carolina Stingrays, amassing 776 appearances, 261 points (106 goals, 155 assists), and 2,807 penalty minutes.

Hunt ventured overseas for the first time in 2019, signing with the KHL team Kunlun Red Star, where he recorded three points in 68 games over two spells. Prior to joining the Flyers, he played in the Erste Liga, scoring 43 points (14 goals, 29 assists) in 54 games for CSM Corona Brasov and DVTK Jegesmedvek.

What Does Garet Hunt’s Re-signing Indicate About the Fife Flyers’ Future Plans?

The decision to retain Garet Hunt signals a clear direction for the Fife Flyers. It demonstrates the team’s continued commitment to building a roster that emphasizes toughness and physicality. Hunt’s promotion to assistant coach also suggests that the club is moving towards appointing a new head coach, as they have been without a permanent bench boss since Jamie Russell’s departure in February. The vacancy is expected to be filled soon.

“I cannot thank the entire Fife community and the Flyers organization enough for their unwavering support; it made my experience in the Kingdom this past season truly amazing,” Hunt stated upon signing his contract extension. “There is so much potential within this organization, which made the decision to return an easy one. I am excited about this opportunity and eagerly anticipate seeing everyone next season.”
