The Cardiff Devils have clinched their fourth Elite League playoff championship, triumphing over the Sheffield Steelers with a 5-2 victory in the final. Nolan Yaremko was instrumental in the win, scoring two goals, while goaltender Christian Stoever made 23 saves to secure the championship.
Cardiff took the lead early in the game. Kohen Olischefski played a key role in the opening goal, which came less than three minutes after the puck drop. Following a high-sticking incident that resulted in a double-minor penalty for the Steelers, Olischefski found the back of the net, beating Matthew Greenfield on his blocker side.
While the Steelers managed to withstand the initial pressure from the Devils, who displayed both physical intensity and offensive prowess in the first period, they fought back after the break. Kevin Tansey equalized for Sheffield four minutes into the second period.
Despite being largely pinned in their own zone for much of the second period, Christian Stoever made crucial saves to keep the Devils in the game. Towards the end of the period, Nolan Yaremko scored two quick goals, giving Cardiff a 3-1 advantage heading into the final intermission.
In the third period, Ryan Tait narrowed the deficit for Sheffield with six minutes remaining. However, Josh MacDonald and Olischefski sealed the victory with empty-net goals, securing the playoff title for Cardiff.
Analysis: Cardiff Devils Crowned 2026 Elite League Playoff Champions
Despite a brief wobble in the second period, the Cardiff Devils were deserving champions. Their path to the final included strong performances against the Coventry Blaze and Glasgow Clan. In the final, Cardiff dominated the first period, capitalizing on power plays and limiting the Steelers’ offensive opportunities. After conceding, Stoever’s stellar saves were vital in maintaining the tie before Yaremko’s decisive brace.
The depth of the Cardiff squad proved to be a key differentiator. Coach Thompson had the advantage of utilizing four full forward lines, whereas Sheffield’s coach, Aaron Fox, was limited by having only two fit centers. Samuel Tremblay played through a knee injury sustained in the semi-final, but his usual dynamism was noticeably absent.
This playoff final defeat adds another “what if” scenario to Fox’s tenure with the Sheffield Steelers. While the team possessed talent, they couldn’t match the consistency of the Belfast Giants in the regular season and ultimately ran out of steam in the championship game.
For Cardiff, this triumph marks a successful first season under Coach Thompson, and they can now look forward to competing in the IIHF Continental Cup in 2027.
