UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture sustained significant injuries following a car accident while practicing at a race track in Kansas City. The mixed martial arts icon was subsequently airlifted to a burn center for treatment.

The 62-year-old, who has been preparing for a potential debut in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) this year, was involved in the serious crash during a practice session on Tuesday. Couture`s injuries included first and second-degree burns, as well as trauma and smoke inhalation.

Following the wreck of his vehicle, Couture was transported by air to a local burn facility, where he is currently recovering. Sources close to Couture confirmed the extent of his injuries on Wednesday, but expressed optimism that the former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion is expected to make a full recovery.

At this time, the precise cause of the accident that led to Couture`s injuries remains undisclosed.

News of the crash was first reported by TMZ.

Couture had been dedicating several months to practicing and honing his skills with the aim of eventually competing in a race, showcasing his continued interest in pursuing new endeavors beyond his storied MMA career.

In a recent interview, Couture candidly described drag racing as a vastly different challenge compared to competing in mixed martial arts, a sport where he is widely regarded as one of the all-time greats.

“I’ve been a fan of racing for 12, 13 years,” Couture said. “From up in the stands it looks really easy — oh they just go fast … it’s so much more involved.”

As one of the rare athletes to hold titles in two different UFC weight classes, Couture successfully transitioned after his fighting career. He became involved in coaching, co-founding the popular Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, and has worked as a commentator, notably with PFL. He has also built a substantial acting resume, appearing in numerous films and television productions in recent years.
