After fourteen seasons in the National Hockey League, defenceman Tyson Barrie has announced his retirement from professional sports.
The 34-year-old Victoria, B.C., native played 809 NHL games, representing five different teams: the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames. Renowned for his offensive prowess and ability to contribute to the attack from the blue line, Barrie concludes his career with 109 goals and 396 assists, totaling over 500 points.
Barrie was selected 64th overall in the 2009 draft by the Avalanche and made his NHL debut during the 2011-12 season. He quickly established himself as a power-play specialist, particularly during his tenure with the Oilers, where he was a key figure in the league`s top-ranked power-play unit in 2021.
Last season, Barrie signed a one-year deal with the Flames after attending training camp on a professional tryout agreement. He was subsequently placed on waivers and finished the season playing for the Calgary Wranglers in the AHL.
