A recent report indicates that negotiations between restricted free agent Luke Hughes and the New Jersey Devils regarding a contract extension have hit a snag over the proposed term. The primary point of contention is the length of the deal.

Hughes` representatives are reportedly seeking a five-year contract. This duration would strategically align Luke`s agreement with his brother Jack Hughes` current deal, potentially positioning both players to become unrestricted free agents concurrently by the 2030-31 season. Jack Hughes notably signed an eight-year, $64-million contract in 2021.

Conversely, the Devils organization is pushing for either a shorter three-year bridge deal or a long-term commitment of eight years for the young defenseman.

Luke Hughes, currently 21 years old, has accumulated 17 goals and 76 assists for a total of 93 points, with a minus-34 rating, across 155 career games for the Devils. Over his two full seasons with the team, he has maintained an average ice time exceeding 21 minutes per game.
