Spanish authorities announced on Tuesday their belief that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was exceeding the speed limit during a highway collision last week that resulted in the deaths of both him and his brother, Andre Silva. While the Spanish Civil Guard`s investigation is ongoing, officials stated that they believe Jota was at the wheel when the accident occurred.

Jota, a prominent player for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, was reportedly driving with his brother in a Lamborghini. The vehicle experienced a tire blowout, leading it to leave the highway before crashing and igniting. According to reports in Portuguese media, Jota was en route to Santander to catch a ferry to England, intending to rejoin his Liverpool teammates after being medically advised against flying following a recent lung procedure.

These initial findings from Spanish authorities follow days after a funeral service was held for both Jota and Silva in their native Portugal. The service was attended by Jota`s teammates from both Liverpool and the Portugal national squad. Jota is survived by his wife and their three children. His death occurred just weeks after he and his wife had married during Liverpool`s offseason.
