Northwave introduces the Extreme X, its latest off-road shoe designed for peak performance in gravel and cross-country cycling. As the flagship model in Northwave’s Extreme line for Summer 2026, it represents a new benchmark for the Italian brand’s top-tier offerings.
Thirty years after Northwave’s inaugural Olympic success with Paola Pezzo, the company opens a new chapter with the Extreme X. This shoe is engineered to redefine off-road competition rules, from cross-country and gravel to marathon events.
Advanced Technologies
With the Extreme X, Northwave’s engineers sought to integrate technical innovations from their Veloce Extreme road cycling shoe with the specific demands of off-road riding. Key among these features is the Hyperlight HT sole, boasting a High Tail design, which achieves superior levels of stiffness and performance. This shoe sets new standards for power transmission in off-road cycling.
The Hyperlight HT sole, the core of the new Extreme X, is crafted entirely from unidirectional carbon. This construction elevates power transfer to the next level, minimizing energy dispersion and ensuring that every watt from the athlete is efficiently transmitted to the ground.
Design and Performance Metrics
Applied to the Extreme X, the High Tail concept manifests as an asymmetrical design that extends along the outer part of the heel. This detail provides enhanced rigidity and support during pedaling, effectively stabilizing the foot. The primary goal is to achieve superior efficiency by aligning and stabilizing the foot during the power stroke, a crucial factor, especially during high-intensity efforts when seeking optimal performance.
In terms of measurable performance, the new Hyperlight HT sole unequivocally elevates the metrics, boasting a 169 percent increase in torsional rigidity and a 41 percent increase in compression rigidity. These values attest to superior pedaling efficiency, empowering cyclists to push beyond their limits and consistently achieve their best possible performance.
In off-road cycling, where continuous accelerations, stability, and prolonged load phases are common, these impressive metrics directly translate into tangible efficiency benefits.
New Features
Further pedaling support comes from the patented PowerShape footbed, which enhances efficiency and comfort over long distances or during prolonged efforts. Another notable feature related to the sole is the inclusion of rubber/TPU inserts, providing superior traction and stability. Crucially, these inserts are replaceable, ensuring the shoe maintains maximum efficiency throughout its lifespan.
Designed as a pure performance product, the Extreme X also prioritizes weight. Its lightweight and volume-optimized upper integrates high-ventilation zones to ensure perfect thermoregulation for the rider.
Complementing these features is Northwave’s Anatomical Reticular Support (ARS 3.0) system, an internal upper structure that gently envelops the foot, enhancing stability and effectiveness. The Underlap design ensures a snug, uniform fit without pressure points, achieved by seamlessly integrating the upper layers inside the shoe via two rotor mechanisms.
The Northwave Extreme X is now available in black and white, in sizes 36 to 50 (including half sizes from 39.5 to 45.5).
The retail price is 299.99 euros.
