Weegar Departs Calgary for Utah
The NHL Trade Deadline brought significant activity, highlighted by the Calgary Flames sending defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. In return, the Flames acquired defenseman Olli Maatta, along with up to three second-round picks from 2026 and prospect Jonathan Castagna. Notably, there is no salary retention on Weegar’s remaining five years of his $6.25 million annual contract.
Utah Mammoth General Manager Bill Armstrong pursued an aggressive strategy at the deadline while carefully protecting his prospect pool. Although the Mammoth had shown interest in Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues, the asking price was deemed too high. Nevertheless, Armstrong successfully strengthened his team’s defensive core, particularly crucial as the Mammoth maintained a playoff position in the Western Conference.
MacKenzie Weegar is recognized as a robust two-way defenseman, known for his active play across all three zones and strong puck-moving abilities. He was initially acquired by the Flames from the Florida Panthers as part of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. Weegar’s departure represents a considerable loss for a Flames team that is gearing up to open a new arena in the coming years. While Weegar could have been a key veteran presence to guide younger players through challenging periods, Flames GM Craig Conroy’s overarching goal is to revitalize the team by prioritizing youth. Weegar was a popular and authentic figure, embraced by the Canadian market, and respected as a leader.
Chicago Trades Dickinson to Edmonton for Mangiapane
Another impactful trade involved the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers acquired Jason Dickinson from Chicago, while Andrew Mangiapane headed to the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks retained 50 percent of Dickinson’s $4.25 million salary, as he is currently in the final year of a two-year agreement.
Additionally, the Chicago Blackhawks received Edmonton’s first-round pick in 2027, which is top-12 protected.
This exchange saw both the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks swap middle-six forwards. The Oilers were actively seeking a third-line center who could offer physicality and strong defensive capabilities. Dickinson is known for his shutdown play, diligent work ethic, effective stick work, and strong performance in tough deployment situations.
Conversely, Mangiapane joins the Blackhawks with the aim of rediscovering the prolific scoring touch he once displayed in Calgary, particularly after a shoulder injury in 2023 affected his offensive output and shot creation.
Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson continues to strategically utilize cap space to accumulate valuable assets for players who do not fit into the team’s long-term plans. This trade aligns perfectly with Chicago’s ongoing rebuilding strategy.
