Montreal`s public transit agency (STM) has announced that re-displaying the popular “Go Habs Go!” slogan on city buses before the winter season is currently considered too expensive.

The agency had previously removed the English cheer from its electronic signs, replacing it with “Allez! Canadiens Allez!” to comply with regulations set by the province`s language watchdog.

Following significant public outcry, the language office reversed its decision in June, granting the STM permission to use the English word “go” on its display signs to support the city`s NHL team.

However, the transit agency confirmed that it would not be feasible to reinstate the original message on buses until at least the winter, coinciding with the regularly scheduled period for updating all signage.

Agency spokesperson Isabelle Tremblay clarified that manually modifying the electronic displays on more than 1,000 buses would incur substantial costs, which are not currently allocated in the budget for an unscheduled update.
