Michael Pezzetta has returned home. The Toronto-born left winger signed a two-year contract valued at $1.575 million with the Maple Leafs on July 1, after spending his entire NHL career to date with the Montreal Canadiens. During a recent appearance on the JD Bunkis Podcast, the 27-year-old shared details about how the deal came together and what it means to him to play for his hometown team.

“My agent was just talking to Toronto during free agency, and things moved pretty fast,” Pezzetta said. “Once I learned about the opportunity and had the chance to go there, it was something I couldn`t pass up. It`s been my dream to wear that sweater my whole life.”

While some players might hesitate about joining their local team, especially in a market as intense as Toronto, Pezzetta had no reservations. He believes his experience in Montreal has prepared him well.

“Montreal is obviously a significant market as well, so coming here, you`re somewhat accustomed to that level of pressure,” the forward noted. “Ultimately, whether you’re a Maple Leaf or a Hab, it involves responsibility and pressure, and I`m genuinely looking forward to it.”

His time dealing with pressure has taught Pezzetta how to effectively balance his passion and competitive drive for the game.

“I`m very emotional and competitive; when I`m on the ice, I want to win, that`s just part of my DNA,” Pezzetta stated. “I worked hard to earn my spot, and I`m fighting to keep it, so my intensity comes from that drive and the desire to win. Through that intensity, you get to win, enjoy time with your friends and teammates, and experience significant moments.”

Pezzetta`s intense style has also led to him participating in numerous on-ice fights throughout his career. While some may not appreciate this aspect of hockey, the winger considers it simply part of the game.

“I play the game hard and sometimes finish checks that lead to someone challenging you to a fight. It`s essentially players holding each other accountable,” Pezzetta explained. “If I see something like that happen to a teammate, I`m someone who just gets this burning feeling inside, thinking, `I need to do something about that` – I`m definitely not afraid of anyone.”

Pezzetta has accumulated 15 goals and 38 points over 200 career NHL games, along with registering 710 hits.
