During Wednesday`s Team Canada press conference in Calgary, even the exceptionally swift Connor McDavid seemed surprised by how quickly his contract situation became the main topic of discussion.

The Edmonton Oilers captain, Connor McDavid, light-heartedly quipped, “Not even a gentle Olympic question before we dive in?” as Sidney Crosby and Sam Reinhart shared a laugh alongside him.

McDavid reiterated his stance from late June, stating, “I mentioned at the end of June that I intend to take my time with this, and my feelings haven`t changed. I want to carefully consider all aspects.”

He emphasized his commitment, declaring, “My primary goal is to win in Edmonton, closely followed by securing Olympic gold with Team Canada.”

With only a year remaining on his current $12.5 million annual contract, both McDavid and Oilers GM Stan Bowman have indicated a desire to finalize an extension this summer.

Until an agreement is reached, his contract status is likely to remain a dominant subject whenever the world`s premier player is discussed.

When asked about the possibility of starting the season without a new deal, McDavid responded cautiously.

He stated, “Honestly, all possibilities are being considered.”

Adding further, “We`re working through the process. I don`t have a strong preference at this point. My main concern is that the team is completely focused and prepared for Day 1, free from any unnecessary distractions.”

The most effective way to prevent such distractions would be to finalize the contract long before the season begins.
