Undefeated former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has consistently voiced his perspective regarding women’s involvement in professional mixed martial arts (MMA). His stance, which has often sparked debate, stems primarily from deeply held cultural and religious beliefs.
Nurmagomedov has frequently expressed that, in his view, the inherent brutality and aggressive nature of professional fighting are not suitable for women. He suggests that women have different, equally important roles in society, often emphasizing family, motherhood, and nurturing within the home. While he acknowledges and respects female athletes in other sports, he maintains that the combat-intensive environment of MMA conflicts with what he perceives as traditional female virtues and responsibilities.
He has previously stated his belief that women should be “fighters in the home” in terms of raising children and supporting their families, rather than competing in a cage. This viewpoint aligns with specific interpretations of Islamic traditions and cultural norms prevalent in his native Dagestan, where gender roles are often more strictly defined.
Despite the growing popularity and success of women’s MMA divisions globally, Nurmagomedov has remained firm in his personal conviction, advocating for a separation of men’s and women’s roles within the sporting arena, particularly in a high-impact combat sport like mixed martial arts.
