Simplifying the Winnipeg Jets` off-season, it can be seen as a period defined by a key addition and a significant departure.
The Jets officially brought local hero Jonathan Toews aboard on a one-year deal starting July 1. Even after a two-year break from the NHL, signing the veteran forward, who is one of the era`s standout players, created significant excitement beyond just his connection to the city.
While peak Toews isn`t expected, there`s optimism that with sufficient preparation, the 37-year-old could effectively address the team`s need for a second-line center.
This signing is seen as the positive development.
On the less positive side, winger Nikolaj Ehlers, who spent 11 years with the team, departed as a free agent to Carolina. Ehlers` exit undeniably leaves a considerable gap in the top-six forward group.
It remains uncertain how these changes will affect a team that led the NHL with 116 points last season. Optimists might view the Toews acquisition as a net gain, despite Ehlers` departure, due to filling a crucial need at center.
Those with a more cautious perspective might argue that relying on Toews as a top-six player after his time away is risky, and that replacing Ehlers` unique game-breaking skill through trade will be difficult.
Beyond adjustments to the top two lines, most other roster changes made by Winnipeg this summer are considered minor.
