Preview Jets Aim for Next Level After Playoff Disappointment

As the Winnipeg Jets open their training camp, a familiar and persistent question arises: can this team finally make a deep run in the playoffs?

Last season, the Jets demonstrated their strength by clinching the Presidents` Trophy for the NHL`s best regular-season record, followed by their first playoff series victory since 2021. However, their Stanley Cup aspirations were ultimately cut short in the second round.

Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, speaking on Thursday, reflected on the experience. He underscored the significant opportunity before the team, noting that the “hunger, scars, and pain” from their premature exit provide valuable lessons for any group. He added that this particular Jets squad is remarkably close-knit, sharing both their successes and disappointments.

The upcoming 2025-26 season brings notable changes to the roster. The Jets lost key players, including high-scoring winger Nikolaj Ehlers, who departed via free agency, along with forwards Mason Appleton and Brandon Tanev. Furthermore, center Adam Lowry is recovering from hip surgery and isn`t expected back on the ice until late October or early November.

In response to these departures, Cheveldayoff made a significant acquisition by signing veteran center Jonathan Toews. Toews is making a return to the game after missing the past two seasons due to illness. The team also added several journeyman forwards to boost their depth.

With Lowry sidelined, considerable expectations will rest on Toews` shoulders.

Cheveldayoff expressed his enthusiasm for Toews` return, observing, “The biggest thing you see is the level of enthusiasm. When you are potentially losing something, then you get a chance to get it back, you really appreciate just how fortunate you are.” He conveyed his excitement for Toews to play the game he loves, for the organization to have him, and for his parents, calling it a “storybook” moment.
