Preview Jeff Skinner signs one-year, $3M deal with Sharks

Veteran forward Jeff Skinner is making a move south, having signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks valued at $3 million, the team announced on Friday.

Skinner spent the previous season with the Edmonton Oilers. He participated in 72 regular-season games, recording 29 points, which included 16 goals and 13 assists.

He also experienced the NHL playoffs for the first time in his 15-year career. However, his participation was limited to just five games, where he registered one goal and one assist, during the Oilers` run to the Stanley Cup Final.

The 33-year-old, who hails from Toronto, was the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes.

In the 2010-11 season, he was awarded the Calder Trophy as the league`s top rookie after achieving 63 points (31 goals, 32 assists).

Ahead of the 2018-19 season, Skinner was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. During that campaign, he netted a career-high 40 goals. While he had reached the 63-point mark three times previously, Skinner surpassed this personal best in 2022-23 with 82 points (35 goals, 47 assists).

The Sabres bought out the remaining term on his contract in the summer of 2024.

Throughout his career, playing for the Hurricanes, Sabres, and Oilers, Skinner has accumulated a total of 699 points (373 goals, 326 assists) over 1,078 regular-season games.
