Preview Isaac Howard ‘Super Psyched’ to Start NHL Career with Oilers

Just last week, Isaac Howard was trying to persuade Gavin McKenna to become his teammate at Michigan State University.

However, everything changed dramatically on Tuesday.

Hours after McKenna announced his commitment to Penn State, Howard was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers in a trade deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The recent recipient of the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top player in NCAA men`s hockey, also secured a three-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers.

During a Zoom press conference with reporters on Wednesday, the 21-year-old Howard shared his enthusiasm. “`I`m super psyched,` he stated. `It`s such an unreal opportunity. I`m grateful Tampa was able to make this done. I can`t wait to get started. Definitely such a cool place. Couldn`t be happier.`”

Howard, who was originally drafted 31st overall in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Lightning, had not reached contract terms with Tampa. Consequently, he was making preparations to return to Michigan State for his senior season before the trade materialized.
