Haji Wright`s exceptional goal-scoring record for Coventry City this season places him among the top forwards globally. This remarkable performance has secured his return to Mauricio Pochettino`s United States men`s national team squad for upcoming fixtures against Ecuador and Australia, marking his first potential USMNT appearance since an injury sustained during the Gold Cup against Trinidad & Tobago in June.
Having been part of the 2022 World Cup squad where he netted the USMNT`s sole goal in their Round of 16 loss to the Netherlands, Wright, like all his teammates under Pochettino, is determined to secure his place for the 2026 tournament to be held on home soil.
Speaking to the media prior to Friday`s friendly against Ecuador, Wright openly stated his ambition: “It`s no secret that I want to be in the World Cup squad.” Rather than dwelling on his Gold Cup injury, the forward has channeled his energy into maintaining a positive mindset and showcasing sensational form on the field.
Reflecting on the injury, Wright admitted, “It`s disappointing. I was super excited to be at the Gold Cup, to be with the guys, and hopefully go on a run and win the tournament.” He continued, acknowledging the outcome: “In the end, that`s obviously not how it turned out, but it`s disappointing to not be able to really contribute much, and I just tried to heal up and get ready for the season and hopefully earn my spot back into the national team.”
Now recalled to the squad, Wright is actively working to overcome the disappointment of the Gold Cup. Known for his versatility—capable of playing on the wing, as an attacking midfielder, or a traditional number nine—Wright has truly hit his stride this season as a primary striker under manager Frank Lampard. Regarding his preferred role, Wright stated, “I`ve been playing primarily striker this season, so that`s where I see myself, but if I`m asked to play out wide or take a step back and play as a 10, that`s all fine with me. I feel comfortable in all positions.”
While Wright noted he hasn`t yet discussed specific positional roles with Pochettino and his coaching staff, his previous two appearances under Pochettino for the USMNT saw him deployed as both a striker and a left winger.
