Understanding Sportsnet NHL Blackout Policy

Due to regional broadcast regulations mandated by the NHL, Sportsnet is required to blackout certain game telecasts in specific areas across Canada. The broadcast boundaries for Sportsnet`s regional NHL games have been established by the NHL since the network’s inception in 1998, and Sportsnet is contractually obligated to adhere to these rules.

To help our viewers better understand how these blackouts impact them, here is an outline of where specific team telecasts are available:

Vancouver Canucks Broadcasts

Any Vancouver Canucks games aired on Sportsnet Pacific or the Sportsnet ONE companion channel, Sportsnet Vancouver Hockey, are exclusively available to viewers in British Columbia and the Yukon.

Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers Broadcasts

Games featuring the Calgary Flames or Edmonton Oilers, broadcast on Sportsnet West or the Sportsnet ONE companion channels Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet Oilers, can only be viewed in Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

Important Note for Manitoba Residents: As of the 2011-12 season, NHL blackout restrictions dictate that all Flames and Oilers games on these specified channels are blacked out for viewers in Manitoba.

Toronto Maple Leafs Coverage Explained

What if I subscribe to a single Sportsnet channel in the Leafs region?

Rogers Sportsnet Ontario, the Official Broadcaster of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has expanded its coverage footprint, now reaching an area from Petawawa in the North to Kingston in the East. Viewers who subscribe to only one Sportsnet channel and reside West of a line drawn from Sudbury (North) to Brighton (South) will exclusively access Toronto Maple Leafs games via Sportsnet Ontario.

What if I subscribe to all Sportsnet channels in the Leafs region?

Viewers with a full Sportsnet channels package living within the Toronto Maple Leafs` designated territory (historically referred to as the “Yellow region”) will have access to games on Sportsnet Ontario. Conversely, viewers residing in other home territories (e.g., “White region”) will only be able to watch games pertaining to their specific local team.

What is Sportsnet ONE?

Sportsnet ONE is a 24-hour national sports channel that delivers over 800 hours annually of compelling live-event programming. The channel’s lineup is highlighted by Toronto Raptors and other marquee NBA match-ups, Toronto Blue Jays and additional MLB games, Premier League football, and games featuring the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and Edmonton Oilers.

Critical Broadcast Information

It is vital to reiterate that these blackout policies are not at Sportsnet’s discretion. In all instances of NHL blackouts, we are legally compelled to comply with the boundary rules established by the NHL. Purchasing all four Sportsnet channels from your television provider does not grant you access to additional out-of-market games outside of your designated Sportsnet region.
