A true pioneer of professional hockey is hanging up his skates.
Norwegian hockey legend Patrick Thoresen announced his retirement from professional play via a social media post on Wednesday.
Thoresen, now 41, made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers in 2006. During his rookie season, he tallied 16 points (four goals and 12 assists) in 68 games.
While playing for the Philadelphia Flyers in 2008, Thoresen participated in the opening game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, becoming the first Norwegian-born player to appear in a Stanley Cup playoff game.
His significant contributions to hockey span over two decades. After turning professional in Norway at just 15 years old, Thoresen later built an enduring legacy with the Norwegian men`s national team, participating in 105 international games, including three Olympic tournaments and numerous World Championships.
At the 2012 IIHF World Championship, Thoresen finished second in points (seven goals, 11 assists), trailing only Russia`s Evgeni Malkin and ahead of Sweden`s Henrik Zetterberg.
