PSG: Luis Enrique's Joke to Fabian Ruiz After 2026 World Cup Triumph

After winning the 2026 World Cup with Spain, Fabian Ruiz returned to training with Paris Saint-Germain on Monday at the Poissy Campus. The 30-year-old midfielder received a guard of honor from his teammates and a playful jab from his coach, Luis Enrique.

With two days remaining until their season opener in the UEFA Super Cup against Aston Villa on Wednesday (9 PM) in Austria, PSG is finally at full strength. Following France's fourth-place finish in the 2026 World Cup, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Lucas Hernandez have all returned to the Poissy Campus. New signings Maghnes Akliouche (Monaco) and Lucas Digne (Aston Villa) have also joined, as has Achraf Hakimi, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals with Morocco.

However, all eyes were on Fabian Ruiz. After clinching the 2026 World Cup in America, the Spanish midfielder was given a warm welcome back in the Yvelines. His teammates presented him with a celebratory guard of honor, complete with applause and pats on the head. The 30-year-old was also playfully teased by Luis Enrique.

Often criticized in his early seasons at Paris, Fabian Ruiz has silenced his doubters and become a regular starter under Luis Enrique. Now an undisputed player for PSG with such an extensive list of achievements, the Spanish midfielder is considered a benchmark in his position. So much so that some believe he could be a contender for the next Ballon d'Or after a successful 2026, a year in which he has won everything.

"Fabian won the World Cup, two years ago the Euros, back-to-back Champions League titles, the Nations League… Ballon d'Or," the PSG coach remarked to his squad on Monday during training with a slight smile. As he prepares to begin his fifth season with PSG, Fabian Ruiz, signed from Napoli in the summer of 2022 for €22.5 million, now boasts one of the most impressive trophy cabinets in football history.

It remains to be seen when the new world champion will be ready to return to competition. It will likely take some time, especially as Paris faces a busy start to the season with the UEFA Super Cup against Aston Villa, followed by the Trophée des Champions on Sunday in Lens, and then a home match against Stade Rennais on August 23rd for the restart of Ligue 1.
