Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund believes defenseman Rasmus Andersson`s tenure with the team might be nearing its end.
Backlund openly stated to Michael Russo of The Athletic that a trade for his teammate is “obvious” and imminent.
During the NHL`s European media tour, Backlund explained the situation: “The team is looking for value, and he`s seeking a significant contract. Therefore, he aims to perform well, and the team needs him to. I`ve spoken with him, and he doesn`t wish to be a distraction, which is positive. It`s unfortunate it`s come to this point. I don`t believe they are close to an agreement, but circumstances can change.”
Andersson, 28, is entering the final year of his contract, set to earn $4.5 million next season, positioning him as a prime trade candidate before he can become a free agent.
Last season, he participated in 81 games, recording 11 goals, 20 assists, and a plus/minus rating of minus-38.
The Swedish defenseman has played his entire professional career with the Flames since being drafted in the second round in 2015, accumulating 231 points (47 goals, 184 assists) over 536 games.
Trade rumors surrounding Andersson have persisted since the 2024 deadline, a period when Calgary notably traded away fellow defensemen Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, and Nikita Zadorov.
According to PuckPedia, Andersson possesses a no-trade clause with a list of six teams.
Sportsnet`s Nick Kypreos, on the last off-season edition of Real Kyper`s trade board, also indicated that a trade for Andersson is the most probable scenario.
Kypreos elaborated that for Calgary to maximize its return, Andersson would likely need to be willing to sign an extension with his new team, and his list of desired destinations is reportedly quite limited.
The Flames failed to reach the playoffs last season and remained largely inactive during free agency.
