Hockey superstar Alex Ovechkin has officially announced a collaboration with Russian tech powerhouse Yandex and its streaming service, Kinopoisk, to develop a cinematic project — which could be a film, series, or documentary — centered on his remarkable NHL journey.
Earlier this spring, Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky`s all-time NHL goal-scoring record, accumulating 897 goals as he approaches the final year of his contract with the Washington Capitals. The celebrated forward, who will turn 40 next month, has, through his representatives, granted Plus Studio, Yandex`s production arm, the rights to bring his professional life story to the screen.
Born in Moscow, Ovechkin initially played in the Russian league (now known as the KHL) before joining the NHL. This new agreement also stipulates his participation in promotional campaigns and his role as an ambassador for Yandex.
Since being selected first overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL Draft and making his debut in 2005, Ovechkin has remained with the franchise for his entire North American career.
He quickly became the undisputed face of the Capitals organization, assuming the captaincy in January 2010. A highlight of his career was leading the team to their inaugural Stanley Cup championship in 2018, earning him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
